DeKalb schools chief building her team

Sept 23, 2011

New DeKalb County School Superintendent Cheryl L.H. Atkinson wasted little time putting her senior level staff together.

Kathleen Howe, who had previously worked in the Kansas City Public School System, was named deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction;

Kendra D. March, a doctoral candidate at UNC-Charlotte and principal of Westerly Hills Academy, was named deputy superintendent of school leadership and operational support;

Gary Brantley, who served as chief information officer for the Lorain City Schools for four years, will assume that role in DeKalb.

Walter Woods, a vice president in the corporate division of Cohn & Wolfe public relations, has been named the district’s executive director of communications.

The people who previously held the positions are all under contract and have been re-assigned throughout the district. Atkinson said more changes are coming.

“We will continue to make the changes necessary to ensure student success throughout the district,” Atkinson said.
