A DeKalb police officer shot a man trying to run him and another officer over with his car, a police spokeswoman told AM 750 and now 95.5FM News/Talk WSB.

The man apparently was trying to run from police after attempting to rob two people on Mountain Industrial Boulevard Tuesday afternoon, Officer Mekka Parish told WSB Radio. The man attempted to rob the couple but then drove off in his car, Parish said.

The pair followed him in their own car, calling 911 as they were driving, Parish told the radio station.

DeKalb police officers found the man near a gas station at Rays Road and Memorial Drive, and the officers ran after the man, she said.

At some point, the man tried to get back in his car and ram it into the police officers, Parish told WSB Radio.

"One of our officers was forced to deploy her Taser, and the male officer was forced to discharge his weapon," she said. "He was struck multiple times. He was conscious and alert when he left the scene."

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He is in serious condition, Parish told the AJC.

Investigators continue to interview the couple to determine exactly what happened and whether another person was involved in the attempted robbery, Parish told WSB Radio.

The two police officers were placed on administrative leave as a matter of procedure, Parish told the radio station.

The man's name and the officers' names have not been released. Early reports incorrectly stated the man may have been trying to rob a nearby Wells Fargo bank.
