DeKalb Juvenile Court gets $1.1M federal grant for youth internships, training

The federal government has given the DeKalb Juvenile Court a $1.1 million grant for paid youth internships and training.

The three-year YouthBuild grant from the U.S. Department of Labor will allow the court to offer paid skills training and work experience for people in DeKalb ages 16 to 24, the county announced in a statement Wednesday.

The Juvenile Court will partner with the solicitor-general’s office, WorkSource DeKalb and other community organizations to provide the internships.

Juvenile Court Chief Judge Vincent Crawford is set to announce the grant at an event Wednesday at the Gregory A. Adams Juvenile Justice Center, accompanied by county CEO Michael Thurmond and several other local officials.

Youth well-being has been a priority of Thurmond’s, with some funds in the 2019 budget going toward creating intervention services aimed at violence prevention.
