DeKalb County taxpayers who owned and resided in their property on Jan. 1 may qualify for a basic homestead exemption, providing significant tax savings. Although no fee is required, the exemptions are not automatically granted and must be applied for in person, by mail or online.

Exemptions are not available for rental or commercial property.

Another exemption is for citizens 62 years of age and older and is determined by age and total household income. Special exemptions are also available for citizens that are totally and permanently disabled.

Applications for these exemptions must be submitted to the tax commission office in person.

An applicant’s 2016 income tax returns and documents showing proof of age and disability status are reviewed for eligibility and applications must be received by April 3 to apply the exemption to the 2017 taxes.

Applications received and approved after April 3 will be granted for the 2018 tax year.
