Volunteers spruced up DeKalb County over the last few weeks by recycling electronics, shredding paper and cleaning streets and nature preserves.

County CEO Lee May said the events, which included Earth Day and the Great American Clean Up, mobilized 1,522 volunteers who collected 22,435 bags of litter.

A cost-benefit analysis by the county indicated the clean-up efforts from March 15 to May 3 saved more than $100,000.
