Federal funds will pay to add three new senior centers in DeKalb County.

The $14 million Community Block Development Grant will pay for centers to be built on Candler Road in south DeKalb, Malone Drive in Chamblee, and an unidentified location in central DeKalb.

The money will pay for design and construction of the centers, which will each be about 15,000 square feet, said Burke Brennan, the CEO’s spokesman. Construction is scheduled to be complete at the end of this year and early next year.

The grant does not pay for staffing, but county officials said they hope to use volunteers and partner with other non-profit organizations to provide staffing. However, some county funds may need to be allocated in the 2012 budget for staffing, Brennan said.

DeKalb currently has six senior centers.
