Decatur superintendent against re-districting

City Schools Decatur is still in the early stages of determining whether to lease the currently empty East Lake Elementary, closed since 2012, as a temporary solution for it student overflow.

“There’s still so many questions we have to answer,” said new Superintendent David Dude. “But if we wind up [leasing East Lake] I would emphatically not recommend re-districting.”

East Lake, owned by Atlanta Public Schools, is about a mile from Oakhurst Elementary and only blocks away from 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue, schools already at “crowded capacity.” But Dude said Monday East Lake wouldn’t necessarily take students from only those schools.

He said that one option included East Lake housing only those students new to the district and who don’t have a history with another Decatur school. Another option might be using East Lake as a magnet school specializing in one or two disciplines.

Dude added that at this point he isn’t sure if East Lake will be a K-3, a 4/5 or K-5 school.
