A private firm is creating new mapping software for Decatur, to allow it to create new maps for internal use and for the public.

The $85,000 contract with Critigen LLC, which City Council approved Monday night, will create a system that allows desktop analysis of geographic information services, or GIS, data and creates a web-based mapping tool.

The system will be integrated with the system of DeKalb County, which is expected to be updated in 2012.
