Georgia college students have until the end of the day Friday to apply for the state's new low-interest loan program. Applications are at: www.gacollege411.org.

Lawmakers provided $20 million for the Student Access Loan Program when they overhauled the HOPE scholarship. It is for families that received some aid but need more, officials said.

The maximum award will be $10,000. The average is expected to be $3,500, which would allow about 5,700 students to receive the loan. The loan will carry a 1 percent interest rate.
