A Dahlonega carpet plant that Mohawk Industries shut down last year is getting an economic makeover with the potential for up to 400 new jobs.
The 340,000 square-foot plant is being purchased by Gold Creek Foods, a Dawsonville-based food company that processes poultry, pork and beef for restaurants, schools, the military and other customers.
The sale price wasn't disclosed, but Mohawk's original asking price was $3.5 million for the 36-acre site near downtown Dahlonega. The deal is expected to close within the next two months.
Sammy Smith, a Gold Creek spokesman, said the plant expects to hire 100 people by the first quarter of 2010. More jobs will be created over time as the company makes renovations, he said, but he could not say when the plant will be at full capacity.
"It depends on the market timeline for the renovations of the plant, but we expect it to be several hundred employees, perhaps somewhere from 300 to 400," Smith said.
Gold Creek bought the plant because its Dawsonville facility, which employs 600, is at full capacity and cannot expand any further.
