There’s about to be a whole lot more “butterburgers” and frozen custard in Johns Creek.

In May, a Culver’s is set to open in the city in north Fulton County. Ground broke on the construction of the building where many burgers will be flipped on Wednesday. The new Culver’s will be at 3121 Peachtree Pkwy., just off Highway 141.

Culver’s began its journey into the bellies of folks in the southeastern part of the United States recently. So, you might ask, what is Culver’s?

It’s a casual fast food restaurant that was founded in Saulk City, Wisconsin, in 1984. Since then it has expanded to locations in 24 states, including a whopping 136 in Wisconsin, 101 in Illinois, 53 in Michigan and 45 in Florida.

The chain's specialty is its variety of "butterburgers" — Culver's calls it that because the crown of each burger's bun is lightly buttered for "an extra touch of goodness" — and fresh frozen custard, but it also serves chicken, soups, salads, fish, shrimp, pot roast and Wisconsin cheese curds.

Earlier this year, an Atlanta private-equity firm, Roark Capital Group, bought a minority share of the Culver Franchising System.

According to its website, Culver's has seven locations open in Georgia, and plans to open two more this year — the one in Johns Creek and another in Pooler. The closest Culver's locations to metro Atlanta are in Canton, Buford and Lawrenceville.
