City Schools of Decatur recently terminated its contract with Winter Construction for renovation and new construction of Decatur High School. Superintendent Phyllis Edwards pointed out the contract was subject to cancellation if a guaranteed maximum price couldn’t be agreed upon. “(Winter) felt they couldn’t reach our budget number ($49 million total and $12 million for Phase One),” Edwards said. “Right now we don’t have the (General Obligation) Bond, and the next SPLOST is two years out.” Edwards, however, is confident a new construction company will be chosen by May and that work shouldn’t be delayed by more than 30 days. There will be no delay on paving a new parking lot, adding seven more trailers and installing underground utilities, which should finish by July. Opening construction of a new building housing the cafeteria, kitchen and 18-21 classrooms will be moved back to early fall.
