Private work crews will be maintaining the public sewer system during the next several weeks, with workers accessing sewer lines and using fire hydrants, city of Alpharetta officials announced.

The county Water Resources Department is using two private vendors to clean sewer lines and remove intruding roots to make the system more efficient and reduce blockages. The city said it’s possible a piece of equipment may get trapped in a sewer line during the process, necessitating digging up a sewer line to remove it.

Officials said crews from Municipal Services Inc. and Video Industrial Services Inc. won’t work on private systems, but may have to cross private property to access a public easement.
