Road crews will close the overpass at I-285 and Ashford-Dunwoody Road this weekend to install a new traffic system geared to ease congestion.

The new "diverging diamond" interchange is designed to increase traffic flow by eliminating backups from motorists seeking to turn left onto the freeway. The new configuration will channel bridge traffic into the left lanes, then return it to the right as it clears the overpass.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will close the bridge at 9 p.m. Friday to allow crews to mark the roadway and install signals. Road work is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Monday. Pedestrian traffic will not be allowed for another month as crews construct a protected walkway in the bridge median.

Motorists this weekend will still have access to the interchange, but northbound and southbound traffic on Ashford-Dunwoody Road will be detoured through Hammond Drive to Perimeter Center Parkway Bridge, then to Perimeter Summit Parkway.

“The contractor will be able to proceed with the weekend work as long as the weather cooperates, but based on the current forecast, we expect to close the bridge,” GDOT district construction engineer Lee Upkins said.
