A Covington mayoral candidate was arrested Wednesday on charges he stole political yard signs of a rival candidate.
Bobby Sigman, 70, faces a number of charges stemming from a complaint that he stole signs from mayoral candidate Ronnie Johnston, said Capt. Ken Malcom, spokesman for the Covington Police Department.
After receiving a complaint that Johnston's signs were being stolen, Covington police set up a sting operation, and Sigman purchased 50 stolen signs from an undercover officer, Malcom said. Police later stopped Sigman's vehicle and he was arrested.
During interrogation, Malcom said, Sigman made false statements to investigators about his role in the thefts. He was charged with making false statements within a political subdivision, theft by taking and criminal trespass, all misdemeanors. He was taken to the Newton County jail and was later released on $3,500 bond.
Efforts to reach Sigman for comment were unsuccessful.
Sigman, 70, is a former Covington city councilman and state representative. He has run for mayor twice previously, in 1999 and 2003.
