Pawn shop employee stabbed in robbery
An employee was stabbed Saturday during an armed robbery attempt at The Hock Shop at 150 Cobb Parkway North.
According to Marietta Police, after the would-be robber entered the store around 10 a.m., the employee and the suspect got into a scuffle. The victim was stabbed multiple times. He was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was described as a thin black male, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 130 to 150 pounds, wearing blue jeans and a blue hooded sweatshirt. Andria Simmons

Marietta culinary arts teacher honored
Marietta High School culinary arts teacher, Chef Ginger Pratt, was named the 2012 recipient of the Georgia Restaurant Educator Excellence Award.
Pratt will receive the award at the National Restaurant Association convention later this year. Pratt and the MHS ProStart culinary team of five students placed fourth out of 14 other high school at the annual Georgia ProStart Competition at Kennesaw State University last month. Janel Davis
Confidence seminars for cancer patients
The American Cancer Society is hosting a series of self-confidence seminars during the spring months for Cobb County cancer patients. The seminars provide tips for women to improve their appearance while going through cancer treatments.
The free workshops will be offered at WellStar Kennestone Campus, St. Andrews United Methodist Church and Piedmont Physicians at Vinings from 10 a.m. to noon.

Peachtree Corners will hold its first city council meeting tonight , a special-called session to set up the new city’s government.
The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Christ the King Church at 5575 Peachtree Parkway.
The city swore in its mayor and six council members Sunday.

Lilburn CID elects officers

Construction to impact Indian Trail Road
Construction will lead to nighttime lane closures on Indian Trail Road from Beaver Ruin Road to Oakbrook Parkway beginning that began Monday.
Construction will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. Friday evening.

Head-on collision kills one, injures another
On person was killed and another injured in a head-on collision Sunday afternoon in Forsyth County.
The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Ga. 369 west of Dr. Bramblett Road, according to a Forsyth Sheriff’s Capt. Tim House.
House said there was one confirmed fatality, with a second person being airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center for treatment.

County purchasing department recognized
Fulton County’s Purchasing and Contract Compliance Department, which handles bidding for county contracts, has been re-certified by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing. The award recognizes excellence in public procurement operations, and this is the third time the department has been honored.

Ball Ground to hold hearing on budget
The City of Ball Ground will hold a public hearing 5 p.m., May 3, at Ball Ground City Hall Council Chambers, 215 Valley Street, Ball Ground, for the second reading of the proposed 2013 budget. The city unveiled the budget at last week’s city council meeting, call for a 1 percent increase over last year’s budget. Johns Creek marks Earth Day Saturday

Georgia Legal Services Program Director Phyllis Holmen will be one of six legal services directors to participate in a White House forum today.

Metro buildings rank high for efficiency
Metropolitan Atlanta ranks third on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2011 list of cities with the most buildings certified with the Energy Star rating, a certification given to buildings that perform in the top 25 percent for energy efficiency compared to similar buildings nationwide. Buildings with the certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Meeting to focus on safety concerns
The DeKalb County Solicitor-General, County Commission’s presiding officer and members of the county police department will hold a meeting this week to discuss safety concerns in south DeKalb.
Solicitor Sherry Boston and Commissioner Larry Johnson said the breakfast will be a first in a series of events for business owners designed to show how they can help keep crime away.
The meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Piccadilly Restaurant in the South DeKalb Mall. Meetings also will be held in August and December, at locations to be announced.

Retired educators to meet Thursday
The Georgia Retired Educators Association in Decatur and DeKalb will hold its monthly meeting this week.
Retirees from Decatur and DeKalb schools, both public and private, as well as retirees of other districts who live in the county, are welcome in the group. The focus of this month’s meeting will be on retirement benefits. The group also will elect its officers for the coming year.

Volunteers need for South River Cleanup

Registration open for Dunwoody bike ride
Registration is open for the fourth annual Bicycle Ride Around Dunwoody on Saturday during the Lemonade Days festival at Brook Run Park. Three routes will be offered, ranging from 3.5 to 37 miles. Search warrant served on Clayton finance dept.
A search warrant has been served on the Clayton County finance department as part of an on-going investigation by a special grand jury investigation into public corruption charges, the prosecutor confirmed Monday. This grand jury has already targeted several former officials. Former water authority manager Herbert Etheridge has pleaded guilty to perjury. Former Sheriff Victor Hill is charged with racketeering. Peachtree City’s BMX closed for work
Starting today , Peachtree City’s BMX track will be closed for a major rebuilding until approximately April 20.
Because of the heavy equipment involved, access to the Peachtree City Dog Park will be restricted to the path through the woods behind the green shed.
