Georgia State cuts 110 positions
Georgia State University eliminated 110 positions this week, 25 of which were filled, to save about $4 million.
The cuts were necessitated by the 3 percent budget cuts Gov. Nathan Deal ordered nearly all state agencies to take because of the struggling economy. The permanent reduction equals more than $5 million for Georgia State, President Mark Becker wrote in a memo.
The college has also postponed maintenance projects, cut money for travel and left dozens of vacant staff and faculty positions open.
The university previously eliminated 300 jobs in 2009 to save about $9 million.

County seeks bids for lobbying job
Fulton County has begun the process of hiring an outside lobbyist to protect its interests in the next state Legislative session, when Northside lawmakers could start efforts to dismantle the county government’s powers. Commissioners have been unable to agree on whether to look for an outside lobbying firm, use lobbyists on the payroll, or both. The resolution to solicit bids passed Wednesday.
Dissenting voters said lawmakers frown upon the county spending high amounts for lobbying and that commissioners themselves should speak out at the Capitol.
