Nine Fulton schools make fitness honor roll

Nine Fulton County schools made the 2013 Governor’s SHAPE Honor Roll. The program began as a way to help students and teachers focus on issues related to childhood obesity. The program challenges schools to make improvements in physical activity, nutrition and wellness. East Point to pick up bulk waste for free

The city of East Point Solid Waste Division plans Bulk Waste Amnesty Week (Monday through Thursday). Waste such as household furniture, washers and dryers, lawn mowers and bags of clothes will be collected for free. Place items on the curb before 7 a.m. on regular garbage pickup day. Kennesaw to outsource trash collection

Kennesaw’s City Council is expected to approve a contract 6:30 p.m. Monday to outsource the city’s trash collection to a private provider. Republic Services will start the first week of October.

Of the city’s 17 sanitation workers, one will remain to handle billing services and 11 have found jobs with Kennesaw, other local cities or with the new company.

Metro Resource Center to hold gala

The Metro Resource Center will celebrate 25 years during its Portraits of Sweet Success award gala 6 p.m. today at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis Hotel, 265 Peachtree Center Ave. N.E.

The ceremony will honor individuals who have excelled in their respective careers and contributed immensely in their community.

The Metro Resource Center Inc. is a nonprofit community-based health and social agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for physically and mentally challenged elderly and young adults,.

Lakeside organizers meet Monday

The Lakeside Community Alliance, organizers behind a cityhood effort in north-central DeKalb County, will hold a community meeting 7 p.m. Monday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 3773 Chamblee Tucker Road.

The group has paid for a feasibility study of the city, which would run between Druid Hills Road and the Plesasantdale/Embry Hills area just outside the Perimeter and have an estimated 63,000 residents.

Taste of Fayette returns today

Fayetteville Main Street will offer a fall edition of the popular Taste of Fayette from noon to 5 p.m. today on the Downtown Fayetteville square.
