Dollar General awards literacy grants
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Youth Literacy grants of $184,363 on Sept. 7 to 11 Atlanta-area nonprofits and schools to help those who read below grade level or have reading difficulty.
A partner grant of $160,863 was awarded to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Atlanta. Additional grants were awarded to schools in Atlanta, Decatur, Duluth, Marietta, Stone Mountain, Austell, Alpharetta and Fairburn.

Atlanta Mission gives facilities to Jackson
The Atlanta Mission recently dedicated two state-of-the-art facilities at The Potter’s House in Jackson County.
The facilities will house The New Start Dormitory and the Client Life Center to serve the Atlanta and Northeast Georgia.
The Potter’s House serves chemically-addicted men in need of residential rehabilitation programs. Demand was such that the existing facilities could not accommodate all those in need. Shelia M. Poole

Fulton schools see student growth
Fulton County School Superintendent Robert Avossa announced at the school board Tuesday that 93,818 students were enrolled in the system by the 20th day of the new school year. That’s 625 above projections.
Among the changes, he reported, was an increase over projections in elementary school students on the southside of the county.

Fairburn festival seeks parade entries
The City of Fairburn is soliciting entries for its annual Fall Festival Parade to be held 9:30 a.m. Oct. 6 in downtown. Organizers are looking for entertaining entries for the parade including bands, specialty units, drill teams, and floats.
The organization with the “Best Float” award will receive a pizza party for up to 25 guests.
The parade kicks off the daylong festival featuring arts and crafts, children’s activities, food concessions and entertainment. The Festival promotes tourism, community spirit, quality family fun, and attracts an estimated crowd of 5,000.

Marietta schools to celebrate Constitution
Marietta City Schools will celebrate Constitution Day today with a series of programs at several of its schools.
Constitution Day commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787.
All fifth-graders in Marietta City Schools will receive pocket constitutions. Students will discuss representative democracy, have readings of the document and go over the Bill of Rights.
