Chairman to speak at chamber breakfast

Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee will headline the “First Monday Breakfast” sponsored by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 9. Lee plans to discuss the State of County at the 7:30 a.m. gathering. Online registration and refunds end Jan. 5 at noon, with general admission costing $60. Convention bureau names new director

The Gwinnett Convention and Visitors Bureau has announced the promotion of Lisa Anders to executive director.

Anders was previously deputy director of the bureau.

Anders has worked at the bureau for 14 years, in various sales and marketing positions. Prior to working at the GCVB, Anders worked for Cendant Corp. for five years, and started her career in the hotel industry in 1994.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Anders is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in political science and communications. Joel Anderson

Johns Creek counting faulty streetlights

Johns Creek is conducting a streetlight outage inventory, and it wants residents to report any of the city’s more than 4,500 streetlights that may be on the blink. The city will alert the power companies of malfunctioning or burnt-out streetlights so the utility company can repair them.

“We’re paying the utility companies for this electricity anyway, whether the lights are working or not,” said public works Director Tom Black.

Owners required to register vacant property

Atlanta’s City Council passed an ordinance this week requiring owners of vacant properties to register them with the city’s Office of Code Enforcement by April 1, 2012. The changes to Atlanta’s housing code were spearheaded by Councilwoman Joyce M. Sheperd, who said vacant properties can be unsafe and cause neighborhoods to deteriorate and become unstable. Rec department to host winter break camp

DeKalb County’s parks department will host a winter break day camp for two weeks later this month. The sessions run from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from today through Dec. 23 and Dec. 27-30 at county recreation centers. Cost for the program is $30 per week and covers children between ages 5 and 12. Resurgens to hold annual coat drive

Resurgens Orthopaedics South Surgical Center is hosting its third annual coat drive for needy women and families. Coats will be donated to Haven House of Henry County, a battered women’s shelter. Extra items will be given to homeless shelters that partner with Haven House. Drop off new or gently used coats and blankets at the surgical center, 6645 Lake Drive, Morrow by today .
