Atlanta police early Tuesday arrested two men who allegedly used an odd method to rob pedestrians in Midtown.

Around 4 a.m., officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle believed to be related to the robberies of pedestrians in the Piedmont Avenue area, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.

Jones said that a female victim told police that a man “popped out of the trunk” of a Ford Taurus and robbed her at gunpoint, taking her purse and two cell phones.

Officers stopped a Taurus about two blocks away on Juniper Street, and the victim identified the two men in the car as her assailants.

“The passenger was the person that was identified as coming from the trunk,” Jones said. He was identified as Xavier Carter, a 21-year-old convicted felon, she said.

The driver was identified as Jaquon Hampton, 23.

Jones said Carter took officers to the area where the woman’s purse was dumped after the robbery, and the purse was recovered and returned to the victim.

Police also found 10 cell phones and three laptop computers in the Taurus, and another witness “came forward about another robbery committed by these two males,” Jones said.

Carter and Hampton were charged with robbery and taken to the Fulton County Jail.
