Who was in control of the gun when it discharged?

Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputies are trying to answer that question after a Canton man was shot in the face when he and his brother apparently wrestled over the weapon.

Deputies were dispatched Wednesday night to a home in the Forest Creek subdivision off Cumming Highway to check out reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Jeff Coker, 42, at his home shot in the face.

His brother, Christopher Scott Coker, 37, of Canton, was with the victim when he was shot.

Investigators are still attempting to determine which brother had control of the .357 magnum when it discharged and whether the shooting was intentional or accidental. It appears that alcohol may have been involved in the incident, police said.

The gun belonged to Jeff Coker, whose wife and children were upstairs when the incident occurred. He was flown to Atlanta Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

Christopher Scott Coker was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and reckless conduct. He also had arrest warrants from Henry County and Fayetteville, police said.
