An Augusta-area teenager faces a murder charge in the shooting death of a fellow 14-year-old.

Police said Alana Calahan was shot from behind as she sat at the computer in her family's home, The Augusta Chronicle reported. Alana, an eighth grader, was then dragged outside, across the backyard and into the woods, police told the newspaper. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A friend and neighbor of Alana's, 14-year-old Aaron Schmidt, was arrested and is being held in a youth detention center, according to the report. The high school freshman initially told Alana's older sister an intruder shot the girl.

Aaron later told police the shooting was an accident. A handgun that belonged to Alana's father allegedly was used in the shooting.
