Atlanta's high could hit 90 degrees for the first time since last September on Thursday, but cooler -- and wetter -- weather is on tap for the weekend.
While Atlanta's official high temperature at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Wednesday was 89 degrees, other metro reporting stations did reach the 90-degree mark. Wednesday's high was 91 in Cartersville and 90 in Chamblee and near Mableton. South of Atlanta, it was a scorching 95 in Macon and 94 in Columbus.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said highs should again flirt with 90 on Thursday, but will be a bit cooler on Friday, topping out in the mid-80s.
Chandley said an approaching weather system will begin pushing Gulf moisture into north Georgia on Friday, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms by the afternoon.
The chance of rain will increase to 50 percent Friday night and 70 percent on Saturday, when highs should only reach 80 degrees. Thunderstorms that develop through the period should remain below severe limits, the National Weather Service said.
Sunday should be partly cloudy and even cooler, with a slight chance of isolated showers and highs in the low 70s, Chandley said.
