Commission approves disputed contract

March 20, 2012

The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved a contract that an electrical contractor claims will cost taxpayers an extra $1.3 million.

Commissioners voted unanimously to award a $16.9 million contract to Cleveland Electric Company to build backup generators for two water production facilities. In a lawsuit filed last month, rival contractor M.C. Dean Inc. claimed it could do the work for about $15.6 million.

The lawsuit is still pending in Gwinnett County Superior Court. County officials have declined to discuss the matter, citing the pending litigation.
