The Lilburn Police Department now has its first-ever female captain.

Chief Bruce Hedley announced this week the appointment of Christy Wentzell, who will oversee the department's uniform patrol, community outreach and fleet management. Wentzell, a graduate of Gwinnett's Collins Hill High School with 14 years of law enforcement experience, joined the department on July 25.

She previously worked at the Henry County Police Department and with Montgomery-Robertson County Community Corrections in Montgomery County, Tennessee.

"Capt. Wentzell brings more than 13 years of law enforcement experience to the table and has supervisory experience in patrol operations as well as planning and policy development," Hedley said in a news release. "Capt. Wentzell will certainly compliment my command staff, and I am proud to have her join our team."

Wentzell has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a Master’s in public administration and is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, Kentucky, Hedley said.

She is one of only two captains in the Lilburn Police Department.
