A 34-year-old Atlanta man found guilty of kidnapping and rape in a cold case from December 2000 was sentenced Monday to 85 years in prison, authorities said.
A Fulton County jury earlier this month convicted Andre Newson of rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, aggravated assault and weapons charges, according to a news release from the Fulton District Attorney's Office.
On Monday, Fulton Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams sentenced Newson to serve the next eight decades behind bars.
The day of the attack, the victim was walking on Central Avenue in Atlanta when Newson put a gun to her head, forced her into a car, drove her a few miles away, parked behind a building and raped her, prosecutors said. The man then drove the woman to East Point, told her to get out of the car and sped off.
The woman contacted police, but an initial investigation did not generate any leads.
A break in the case came in 2008, when a DNA sample taken from Newson in another case matched DNA from the 2000 attack, prosecutors said. The defendant pleaded guilty to an escape charge in 2008 and previously served time for aggravated assault, they said.
