Cobb County’s Elections Manager Janine Eveler takes over Sunday as the county’s new elections director, taking the place of retiring director Sharon Dunn who has overseen elections since 1981.
Eveler was selected by the county’s elections board from a field of six candidates, including two other current department employees. She has been with the county since 2004.
Eveler’s selection follows a request by the elections board to hire Dunn, who retires Aug. 31, as a contractor for the elections division at a rate of $800 per day up to $25,000 through the end of the year. Commissioners tabled the request Tuesday after one member questioned the timing and amount of the contract.
The board has not yet decided whether to withdraw or modify its request, said board president Beverly Smith.
“That’s one plus in selecting an internal candidate, it lessens the time for us to need the outside help,” she said.
Commissioners are scheduled to discuss the contract request during a meeting Sept. 14.
