An Austell great-grandmother won’t have any problem dealing with the rising cost of gas after winning $250,000 a year for the next 30 years in the Georgia Lottery’s Decades of Dollars drawing.

Vilmer Meyer, 61, won the top prize March 8 after allowing the lottery’s “Quik Pik” machine to draw the winning numbers: 2-9-12-25-26-42. She bought the ticket at the L&S Food Mart Inc. on South Cobb Drive in Smyrna.

Meyer said she’d fallen asleep the night of the drawing and didn’t find out about it until the next day, when she called the lottery’s hotline, according to a Georgia Lottery release issued Tuesday.

“I hung up, called and called back a third time,” Meyer told lottery officials as she picked up her prize on Tuesday.

Meyer, who has worked 36 years as a surgery scheduler at a local hospital, calls the winnings “a gift. I’m grateful, seriously.”

She had the option of taking a $4 million payout, but Meyer instead chose the 30-year option that will pay her a total $7.5 million if it goes the entire 30 years.

It costs $2 to play Decades of Dollars, and drawings are at 11 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.  The game has a $10,000 second prize.
