Cobb to establish Behavioral Health Court
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to allow the county’s State Court to establish a Behavioral Health Court.
The one-time start-up cost will be $285,000 from Cobb’s general fund with future funding coming from grants and potential insurance proceeds.
If grant funds are not available beyond the $285,000, the program will be terminated.
Also, a part-time program coordinator will be hired.
The program will involve a partnership with a psychological services care provider to develop treatment plans for defendants who commit misdemeanor crimes, resulting from a legitimate behavioral health issue.
They will receive intensive treatment and mentoring to take advantage of community resources to help them avoid resorting to criminal activity.
Chairman Bob Lee said District 1 Commissioner Bob Weatherford has been working on this project for the last few months to help these individuals.
