A Clayton County home invasion and shooting early Wednesday led police to uncover what they described as an elaborate credit card fraud scheme taking place in the house.
“This incident was not a random act of violence in a quiet community. It appears this incident took place due to criminal activity that was transpiring at this home,” Clayton police spokesman Sgt. Otis Willis III said in a news release issued Wednesday night.
A resident of the home and a suspect were shot during the home invasion, which took place shortly after midnight in an upscale neighborhood in the 9100 block of Betony Wood Trail in Jonesboro, police said.
The incident began when two intruders kicked in the front door of the home.
"A weapon was produced, a struggle ensued and two people were shot," Willis told Channel 2 Action News earlier.
The home’s renter was shot in the hand, and one of the alleged invaders was shot in the head. Both were alert when they were taken to a hospital, Channel 2 said. The other suspect got away.
During the subsequent police investigation, Clayton asked the Secret Service and Department of Revenue to assist them. The reason why later was revealed.
“The home contained several credit card processing work stations, safes, jewelry, several luxury cars and approximately $200,000 in cash,” Willis said in the news release. “Warrants are pending for the occupants of the home and the 18-year-old male suspect.”
The suspect in custody was not named. The other suspect has not yet been identified. The investigation is continuing, Willis said.
