Decatur’s commission changed the zoning and land use of 120 West Trinity Place — the site of the Callaway Building — from institutional to commercial and high density residential.

This paves the way for collaboration between the city and Cousins Properties on a mixed-use development, likely including apartments and grocery, although the time frame is not immediate. The building is still 50 percent occupied, and probably won’t be completely evacuated until November.

There’s no date set for when Callaway gets demolished and new construction started. It’s possible the development could also include a parking deck for nearby Decatur High School. The city bought the Callaway Building from DeKalb County in November 2013.
