City Council members Carla Smith, District 1, and Alex Wan, District 6, broke ground Saturday on the future home of a permanent drop-off facility for recyclables and harmful items that are not accepted in the current curbside recycling program at 1110 Hill St.

These types of items include paint, Styrofoam, pesticides, chemicals, light bulbs, clothing, shoes, mattresses, tires, batteries, carpet, cardboard boxes, used electronics and Christmas trees.

This center for hard to recycle materials will be operational in January and located just south of Grant Park.

The efforts of this center will divert waste from the landfill and divert chemicals from the water.
