Ellis E. Mitchell, East Point interim city manager, issued a memo Monday to residents regarding reports of discolored water in the Winburn Street area. According to the document posted on the city’s website, a water crew was immediately dispatched to investigate after a caller indicated water from the faucet was cloudy in color.

While no known cause of the discoloration was detected, a section of line in the area was opened and flushed. The water

is deemed safe to drink, according to the memo, and there is no cause for action (i.e. there is no need to boil water,

there is no advisory in effect).

The purpose of flushing is to rid the system of any debris that can enter, and accumulate in a water distribution system. Furthermore, cloudiness can occur when disinfectant residuals become depleted due to low usage. In some cases

disinfectants may combine with materials in the system to form undesirable byproducts, the memo said.
