There were flag ties, flag shirts, flag headbands, flag ball caps and, of course, actual American flags at the Sandy Springs Veterans Day salute, held Thursday in Morgan Falls Park.

The event drew about 200 people and was one of several held around metro Atlanta to honor former members of the military.  It's the city's first year hosting such a ceremony, which spectators said offered a chance to reflect on the sacrifice of service.

Roswell resident Judy Ogden said she puts members of the military on a pedestal, including her son who is a Navy Seal serving overseas.

"I really feel a connection when I go through the airport or go to something like this," she said. "I feel comfortable going up and starting a conversation because we have that bond. It doesn't have to be much, just saying ‘thank you' instead of walking by."

The Sandy Springs ceremony was attended by dozens of veterans from every branch of the military. They stood and were honored by applause as the Army Ground Forces Band played their respective anthems.

Celebrations were also held Thursday in Marietta and McDonough.
