Forsyth County Sheriff’s officials said that the number of tickets that deputies have written to motorists passing stopped school buses loading and unloading children is on a pace to eclipse last year, with 75 written during 2016 as of mid-May. That compares with 103 during all of 2015.
The sheriff’s office said deputy John Hiott recently wrote his 100th such citation for the 2015-2016 school year, going back to August of 2015.
Sheriff’s spokesman Epifano Rodriguez said Sheriff Duane Piper has made a concerted effort to attack the problem since taking office in 2013, using a multi-pronged approach that has also included various educational and publicity programs. Tickets issued have risen from just 20 in 2010 to more than 100 last year.
Hiott’s milestone announced on Facebook has drawn mainly positive comments.
