The Cherokee Office of Economic Development has rolled out its “Opportunity Cherokee” plan, a five-year economic strategy developed in conjunction with a private consultant over nine months.

COED officials said the plan is designed to focus on five high-growth target areas: advanced manufacturing, commercial developers, corporate operations, film and media and health care and entrepreneurship. It lays out detailed strategies for such goals as attracting developers who will bring Class A office space, mix-used development and hotels and conference centers to the county.

Consultant Del Boyette, who helped develop the plan, noted feedback garnered during preparation of the plan, pointing out that nearly 80 percent of Cherokee residents commute out of the county to work each day. County officials have sought to broaden the county’s business and industrial base as a result.
