The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a hunting rights lease for about 498 acres of county-owned land along Yellow Creek Road east of Canton.

The lease, with Jeffrey G. Doss doing business as Hogan’s Pond Hunting Club, has Doss paying the county a total of $4,482 in three installments for non-exclusive rights “of hunting, shooting and taking game on the premises for such purposes and none other” from Feb. 1, 2019, to Jan. 31, 2020.

The lessee cannot cut or damage trees, greenery or fences, and must repair any damage it causes and remove any tree stands or blinds upon the termination of the agreement, the lease says.

Hunters also must practice safe gun-handling; never shoot toward people, buildings or livestock; operate vehicles and/or ATVs only on established roadways and lanes; not shoot from a vehicle or ATV; and not erect a deer stand within 150 feet of the property’s boundary, and keep the land free of litter and safe from trespass and fire, among other lease requirements.
