Union and Lamar counties will soon be getting fire engines, courtesy of the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners.

Commissioners approved donating two surplus fire engines after new apparatus arrive in May: a 1996 EOne Custom Fire Pumper, to go to Union; and a 1989 GMC Top Kick Commercial Fire Pumper, to go to Lamar.

“Both counties have limited funding to acquire fire apparatus and would be appreciative of the approval,” Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather said in a report to commissioners.

Used equipment like these typically have values of $5,000 to $10,000, Prather said. “These trucks could serve and be of much greater value to these small communities,” he said.
