The city of Chamblee and Keep Chamblee Beautiful will kick off the new Front Yard Tree Program 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18 at the North DeKalb Senior Center, 3393 Malone Dr. in Chamblee.

The new Front Yard Tree Program allows homeowners to apply and to pay a $25 application fee to have a tree installed in the front yard by Trees Atlanta. If you don’t have a yard or don’t have room for a new tree—no problem. Professionals from Trees Atlanta, the Georgia Forestry Commission and local arborist firm Arbormedics will discuss the benefits of trees, will provide tips for homeowners to keep their trees healthy and will answer any tree-related questions. City staff also will be on hand to talk about city tree regulations.

Six soldiers were honored, each receiving Meritorious Service Medals, Thursday for heroic actions responding to the shooting at Fort Stewart. “One of the things I can say unequivocally is that the fast action of these soldiers — under stress and under trauma and under fire — absolutely saved lives from being lost,” U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll told reporters as the six soldiers stood near him Thursday. “They are everything that is good about this nation.” (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
