Two lives, two deaths and one bus stop have loved ones wondering why more hasn’t been done to prevent accidents at an Atlanta intersection.
A little more than three months after Ke’Anna Shields and her unborn daughter were killed at a bus stop along Pryor Road and Amal Drive, another person, Annie Cole, died in the same spot Thursday morning.
Cole, 58, was standing on a sidewalk near a MARTA bus stop when a driver swerved left at a stop sign and hit her and carried her a short distance, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The driver’s car hit a tree and a porch at an apartment complex.
The driver, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital. No information on her condition was released.
The death has shaken Shield’s mother, Angela, who told Channel 2 Action News the crash brought back flashbacks to May, when her daughter was killed.
“I had to take a deep breath and walk back into the house and regroup again,” she said. The then 21-year-old Ke’Anna Shields died May 26 while she, too, was standing at the bus stop and a pickup truck lost control, hit another car and veered off of the roadway, striking her.
Shields was eight months pregnant and set to graduate from nursing school. She was on her way to pick up her cap and gown at the time of the crash.
The deaths of Shields and Cole could have been avoided if there’d been a traffic light, Angela Shields told Channel 2.
“Why did it take another person death for y’all to see how dangerous that four-way stop sign is,” Angela Shields said. The crash may sting even more for her because Angela Shields stays near the bus stop, which is a constant reminder of the accident.
The driver who struck Shields had a medical emergency, which contributed to the crash.
No charges have been filed in Cole’s death, which is still pending investigation.
Still Angela Shields doesn’t want to see a third life taken.
“If nothing is done, it will be another life.”
