A Buford man was killed early Monday in a crash that involved another vehicle on I-985 near the Buford Drive exit, the Gainesville Times reported.

Michael Bruce, 29, was southbound about 3:30 a.m. when he and the driver of another vehicle, Jeny Jackson of Oakwood, intended to exit onto Buford Drive, the paper reported. Bruce’s car attempted to pass Jackson’s car on the right shoulder and hit it in the rear, according to the Gwinnett police report.

Bruce’s car hit the guardrail on the exit ramp and eventually struck a tree. Police said he was not wearing a safety belt.

“Alcohol and speed are being investigated as contributing factors,” the Times reported.

Jackson was not injured.
