This weekend’s list of interstate road construction zones is slim, but numerous in-town surface streets will be closed Sunday for a bike ride and a road race.
The Allstate Life Insurance 13.1 Marathon will affect several roads in Buckhead and Brookhaven, according to Doug Turnbull in the AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB Traffic Center.
The marathon, which will be run from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, will affect Peachtree Road, Johnson Ferry Road, Ashford Dunwoody Road, Lanier Drive, Windsor Parkway, Mabry Road and East Brookhaven Drive, Turnbull said.
Later Sunday, the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition’s “Streets Alive” event will be held, shutting down several streets from 1 to 7 p.m. The route starts at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Boulevard, and proceeds on Highland to Virginia Avenue, then west on Virginia to Monroe Drive and south to Boulevard.
All those bikers and runners might need foul weather gear, as there’s a 70 percent chance of heavy rain Sunday into Sunday night as the remnants of Tropical Storm Karen move into Georgia. Saturday should be partly cloudy, with only a slight chance of showers late in the day.
Other events this weekend include Game 2 of the NLDS between the Braves and Dodgers. First pitch is at 6:07 p.m. Friday at Turner Field.
On Saturday, the Atlanta Football Classic, pitting North Carolina A&T against South Carolina State, kicks off at 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.
Later Saturday, Morehouse plays Clark Atlanta at 7 p.m. at B.T. Harvey Stadium on the Morehouse campus.
There are a few construction projects planned this weekend, weather permitting, include Ga. 400 southbound at Hammond Drive, where the right lane will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, and I-285 on the southwest side of town, where the right lane in each direction will be closed between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Cascade Road, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday and continuing through 5 a.m. Sunday.
Turnbull in the WSB Traffic Center said both projects could be cut short by Sunday’s expected rain.
