BEST IN CLASS

More than $1 million in scholarships have been awarded to 15 metro Atlanta seniors by Alabama State University in Montgomery.  Presidential  scholarship winners receive a full four-year scholarship valued at $120,000. Those winners are:  Geoving Gerard and Vivian Sapp, Frederick Douglas High School; Matthew Kelly, Frederica Lamar, Vincent Oniyilo, Nigel Rogers and Drew Underwood, Benjamin Mays High School. Academic scholarship winners are:  Skylar Morgan, Cedar Grove High School; Latrice Stringer, Aaron Peek, Alexis Williams and Albria Johnson, Benjamin Mays High School; Edward Mosely, Jon'Qua Bazemore and Kamaria Glover, Fredrick Douglas High School.

Andrew Mirolli of Acworth has been recognized by the 2011 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Andrew is a senior at North Paulding High School. He started an education and fund-raising campaign to fight poverty and encouraged other teenagers to experience poverty by living on $2 a day. He received a $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes middle and high school students based on their community service.

Several metro Atlanta students have won scholarships from Georgia United Credit Union. The top three 2011 Vernon E. Carne scholarship winners are: John Ewing, Lakeside High School ($3,000) ; Kayla Brown, West Forsyth High School ($2,000) and Morgan Lett, Salem High School ($1,000).   The 2011 Archbishop John F. Donoghue Catholic Scholarship winners are Avery Edward Daniel, St. Pius X High School ($1,500); and Emily Hogan, Blessed Trinity High School ($1,000).

Sixth graders at Woodward North in Johns Creek placed first out of 66 schools in the 2010-2011 Georgia Mathematics League Contest. Vamsi G. tied for first in the individual category.

Griffin Freeman, a sophomore at Chattahoochee High School in North Fulton, won the state competition of Poetry Out Loud. The competition is sponsored each year by the National Endowment for the Arts. Over 300,000 students take part each year with state winners competing in Washington D.C. for $50,000 in prizes.
