Georgia has four Presidential Scholars this year. The prestigious honor goes to 141 students nationally based on academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship and service. The U.S. Presidential Scholars name their most inspiring teachers, who accompany them to Washington for an awards ceremony. Winners are: Joan K. Bedinger, Campbell High School in Cobb (Most influential teacher: Thomas Jones); Michelle Lee, Wheeler High School, (Teacher: Cheryl Crooks); Georgiy A. Lomsadze, Riverwood High School, Fulton County (Teacher: Anna Swafford); Colby A. Parker, Statesboro High School, Bulloch County (Teacher: Richard Mason).

Students in Georgia earned a total of $16,500 in savings bonds for their winning eCYBERMISSION projects. eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competition. First place teams: Sixth grade – Team: red6, Piney Grove Middle School in Cumming. Students Sudeshana Dabkara, Juan Jaramillo, Matthew Kichler and Tiffany Rutledge (Sports & Recreation). Seventh grade – Team: The Rebels, Otwell Middle School in Cumming. Students Sarah Dean, Faith McKinnon and Morgan Poe (Environment). Eighth grade – Team: RRR, Otwell Middle School. Students Robert Hegi, John Rawlings, Chang Ro and Evan Robinson (Environment). Second-Place teams: Sixth grade – Team: green2; Piney Grove Middle School. Students Rachel Galaif, Sabrina Latipova, Bianca Laubscher and Caroline Stoerker (Food, Health & Fitness). Seventh grade – Team: Rainbow, Otwell Middle School. Students Nicholas Cook, Cole Gizelbach, Edin Imsirovic and Hadi Zaki (Environment). Eighth grade – Team: BAM; Otwell Middle School. Twelve Young Heroes of North Fulton have been recognized for making a significant difference in their communities or for overcoming adversity. The awards are given to students in grades 6-12. The program recognized an individual student from public, middle and high schools in north Fulton County. Two Young Heroes received the Roswell Rotary Overall Young Heroes Award: Liam Nugent is the middle school winner and Michael Trainer is the high school winner. Michael received the Frances McKibben Award sponsored by the Fulton Teachers’ Credit Union for the high school Young Hero with the highest GPA.
