Best in Class

Cory Zeller of Lawrenceville is the winner of a $5,000 scholarship from the Burger King Scholarships Program. Zeller is majoring in political science at Mercer University. He is one of four regional winners. The organization gave out a total of$2.2 million.

Jessica Jones of Decatur High School is the winner of a four-year scholarship given by the Patrick Family Foundation. The scholarship was established in 2002 by members of the Patrick family, who are alumni of the school. Jessica plans to attend Elon University in the fall. While at Decatur High, she took Advance Placement courses and was an active volunteer and leader.

The Woodward Academy Upper School Odyssey of the Mind team placed third out of 43 teams in the You Make the Call Division III at the 2012 World Finals recently. The international competition was held at Iowa State University and drew more than 800 teams from all around the world. Five members of the Upper School team also won first place at the World Finals in 2009.

Cassandra and Sophie Binney of Druid Hills High School, Mary Heekin and Jonathan Kiger of Marist School and Emily Wang of Walton High School  have been awarded full scholarships to study in Germany for a year through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange. This cultural immersion program is funded by the United States Congress and the German Bundestag, Germany's parliament. Fifty students were selected from the southeastern United States; 250 were selected across the nation. The students will have orientation in Washington and cultural excursions to the Bundestag and select German cities. They will live with German host families and attend a German high school.  CBYX scholarships are awarded after a competitive process that weighs academic records, teacher recommendations, student essays and a personal interview.  Students interested in applying for the 2013-14 academic year can visit: http://www.ciee.org/cb or call at (800) 448-9944.
