Riverwood International Charter School students will form a Human AIDS Ribbon in Hoskyn Stadium on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. In 2008, Riverwood became the first school in the nation to create an official Human AIDS Ribbon on World AIDS Day with over 300 students participating. In 2009 and 2010, even more students joined together to form the ribbon on the stadium field, all wearing red T-shirts. Proceeds from this year's event and t-shirt sales will go to the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Riverwood senior Max Greenhouse is leading the effort along with assistant principal Kari Schrock.

Sitan "Stan" Chen, a senior at Northview High School in Duluth, is among 20 students from 11 states competing for up to $100,000 in scholarships in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Stan's math research demonstrates that anything with a circuit -- from computers to mobile devices -- can work faster, cutting down on the time it takes for them to work. The national finals will be held Dec. 2-5 in Washington D.C.

Buford resident Jennifer Berndt, a second year veterinary technician student in Gwinnett Technical College, is the first recipient of the Gwinnett County Veterinary Medical Association scholarship. Jennifer received the award for her outstanding academic achievement and her commitment to profession through her work as a veterinary assistant.

Chamblee High School senior Paroma Chakravarty placed third in the 5th annual Teen Travel Writing Scholarship competition. The program, sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers and the Family Travel Forum, encourages teens to share travel experiences in words and pictures. Nearly 6,000 students entered the competition and blogged about their experiences.

Sycamore Elementary student Gregory Aristilde has been published in this month's issue of "Highlights Magazine." During the 2010-11 school year, Sycamore teacher Jamie White had students write on the subject "What Reading Means to Me." Gregory was one of the top winners from his class, leading his mother to submit his piece to the magazine. Sycamore is a Gwinnett County school.
