Kali Jones, McKenzie Reeves and Caitlyn Carr have been chosen from 1,500 applicants for the 2011 S. Truett Cathy Scholar Award. The award is given each year to 25 restaurant team members nationwide. The 25 were selected from the previous year's class of Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholars, who received $1,000 each. Jones, Reeves and Carr will receive an additional $1,000. Jones is a graduate of Whitefield Academy in Mableton and attends Samford University in Birmingham. Reeves graduated from South Forsyth High School and attends Berry College. Carr, a student at North Georgia College and State University, graduated from Dawson County High School in Dawsonville.

More than 300 chorus students from Henderson Middle School in DeKalb County earned Superior ratings in the Georgia Music Educator's Association District IV Choral Performance Evaluation March 3-4. All four choral groups, under the direction of Dale Duncan, received these ratings.

Third-graders at DeKalb's Fernbank Elementary School recently formed an assembly line to package snack bags for the Central Night Shelter in Atlanta. Fernbank is an International Baccalaureate school that emphasizes global study. Teacher Karen Pitt said the exercise teaches good citizenship and volunteerism.

Sequoyah High School AP physics teacher Kim Geddes has received a $1,000 grant from the Atlanta Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. The money will be used to purchase five telescopes with special eyepieces so students at the Cherokee school can collect data through telescopic observations of the moon.

Students and parents at Heards Ferry Elementary School in Sandy Springs will celebrate their teachers Hollywood style March 14-18 with two parties at the Concourse Athletic Club and Studio Movie Grill. More than 25 area vendors donated their services for the teacher appreciation events.

Who has the best dorm in the country? That would be Georgia State University, according to a new survey conducted by CampusSplash.com. The University Commons on the downtown Atlanta campus won first place in the category “Schools with the Best Overall Dorms” and received high marks for location, convenience, cleanliness and quiet study places. The complex also ranked fourth among the best 14 dorms in the country, according to the site, which provides students with information about college life and admissions. The Commons, which opened in 2007, is four apartment buildings located on 4.2 acres at Piedmont Avenue and Ellis Street. About 2,000 students live there.
