Karl-Mary Akre, a senior at Gwinnett's Peachtree Ridge High, is the first place winner of the Georgia United Credit Union scholarship. She receives $3,000 and plans to attend Vanderbilt University. First runner up is Shakori Danielle Fletcher, who plans to attend Elon University. The South Gwinnett High School senior will receive $2,000. This year, the organization gave out $12,000 in scholarships through its Vernon E. Carne School program and Archbishop John F. Donoghue's program. Students are chosen on the basis of academic achievement and school and community service.

Marietta city school district educators Jennifer Kanzler and Kara Householder are among 200  third- through fifth-grade teachers selected by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to attend the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in New Jersey in July. Kanzler is a fifth grade teacher at A. L. Burruss Elementary. Householder teaches fourth grade at the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA). They will join other math and science teachers from across the nation to build expertise in problem solving.

Four Odyssey of the Mind teams from Woodward North and the Woodward Academy Upper School competed in the state finals competition and earned the chance to compete in the World Finals. The Upper School team, "You Make the Call" won first place in all parts of the competition. The team earned a perfect score and received the Ranatra Fusca Award. This award is given to individuals or teams that demonstrate exceptional creativity. It is the most prestigious award given by Odyssey of the Mind.    Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college.
