Cherokee County's River Ridge High School is one of 240 schools in the nation to receive the Yearbook of Excellence Award from Jostens Yearbooks. The award recognizes yearbook staffs for creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement and successfully managing the yearbook creation process. The editor of the yearbook is Ashten Jenkins. Other yearbook staffers are: Katelyn Brack, Alex Crum, Frank Delgado, Kaity Duffy, Madisen Gloeggler, Brittany Hatchett, Megan Henry, Donyale Jolliffe, Valeria Lobo, Carrie Lusby, Courtney Martindale, Katelyn McKinnies, Jessica Mlaska, Madeline Parr, Emma Pope, Gage Rhoden, Courtney Sapp, Kayla Sullivan, Addison Trahant and Nini Tran. Nearly 900 student and staff musicians from Gwinnett's Hull Middle School and Peachtree Ridge High School in Gwinnett joined together to break the world record for largest string orchestra this month. The new record will be documented and submitted for inclusion in the “Guinness Book of World Records.”

The Consulate General of Japan held its second drawing contest to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Japan's gift of cherry trees to the United States. Nearly 700 submissions were received by the Atlanta office from students in grades K-12. The entries were judged by local art experts. The top three works were selected from each grade level. Willie Chi of Gwinnett's Chesney Elementary and Nytere Boykin of Gwinnett's Rosebud Elementary won art honors.

The Stone Mountain/Lithonia graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has awarded $7,000 in scholarships to 14 high school seniors. Winners are: Chelsea Gibson, Chamblee High School; Kionna Graham, Redan; Christopher Hamler, Columbia; Taylor Harris, Chamblee; Arrion Jackson, Martin Luther King; Kyra Jennings, Stone Mountain; Elaine Mills, Southwest DeKalb; Zahra Mohamed, Columbia; Christian Nixon, MLK; Spencer Robinson, Shiloh; LaPorsche Thomas, Newton High; Kesia Watson, Stephenson; Daphen Wheat, Columbia and Kyle Woumn, Arabia Mountain. The sorority has given out a total of $110,400 in scholarships in 19 years.
